Iran to Participate in ECO's Customs Conference

TEHRAN -- Head of Iran's Customs Mahdi Karbasian is to visit Istanbul to participate in the 5th conference of the heads of the ECO member countries' customs offices. The conference is due to be held from Oct. 19-22, 1998. Karbasian will lead a five-member delegation including the head of the Foreign Ministry's OPEC Bureau. The delegation is expected to arrive in Turkey today.

Turkmenistan, Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan will be represented at the conference. The topics to be discussed at the conference include the transit of goods, computerization of Customs offices, coordination of Customs systems, the formation of a permanent commission of the customs offices of the ECO member states and also the implementation of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to counter Customs irregularities.

Last year, the Islamic republic of Iran also sent a delegation to the conference, during which Iran joined an agreement concerning the transit of goods.
